How to Stain
Reed Baskets
By
Susi Nuss Here is a easy way to add color to your flat or
round reed baskets with commercial wood stains.
Difficulty Level: Easy
Time Required: 30 minutes
Here's How:
- Stain finished baskets rather than staining unwoven materials, that way all the cut ends
are stained.
- Choose a color of oil based woodstain. Minwax brand is the choice of many basketmakers.
- Prepare your work area by covering surfaces with a drop cloth.
- Working outside is best, but be certain to have adequate ventilation if working inside.
- KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
- Combustible. Do not use or store near heat, sparks, flame or other source of ignition.
- Wear a painter's mask, rubber gloves and eye protection when handling.
- Stir the stain until the solids in the stain are well mixed.
- Dilute the stain with mineral spirits. This is personal preference, but 2 parts mineral
spirits to 1 part stain is a good place to start.
- Test a scrap piece of reed before you stain your baskets to check the color.
- Brush the stain onto the basket, covering all surfaces.
- Allow any excess stain to drip off the basket.
- Wipe away any drips that accumulate at the bottom of the basket.
- Recoat the basket if the finished color is not dark enough.
Tips:
- Foam brushes are disposable, but disintegrate quickly. For longer use choose bristle
brushes.
- Use a paint sprayer attached to an air compressor. Wait until you have several baskets
ready to stain and do them in batches.
